A Study Of The Prophetic Visions Of Daniel

Lesson Eighteen – The Assyrian, Sons Of Grecia And Summary

We have ended this study of Daniel with several prophetic scriptures concerning the empires that have persecuted Israel, mainly the Assyrian and Grecian Empires. The reason we have chosen these two is that Isaiah called the Antichrist “the Assyrian,” in his prophetic writings and as we have already studied, the Grecian Empire is a future empire set to persecute Israel.

A prophet during the period of the Captivity of God's Covenant People in Babylon and Persia <Dan. 1:6--12:9; Ezek. 14:14; Matt. 24:15>. Daniel also wrote the book in the Old Testament that bears his name. Daniel was a teenager when he was taken from Jerusalem into captivity by the Babylonians in 605 B. C. He was in his 80s when he received the vision of the prophecy of the 70 weeks <Daniel 9>. In more than 60 years of his life in Babylon, Daniel faced many challenges. But in all those years, he grew stronger in his commitment to God.

We know very little about Daniel's personal life. His family history is not mentioned, but he was probably from an upper-class family in Jerusalem. It seems unlikely that Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, would have selected a trainee for his court from the lower classes. Neither do we know whether Daniel married or had a family. As a servant in Nebuchadnezzar's court, he may have been castrated and made into a EUNUCH, as was common in those days. But the text does not specify that this happened. It does indicate that Daniel was a person of extraordinary abilities.

We tend to think of Daniel as a prophet because of the prophetic dimension of his book. But he also served as an advisor in the courts of foreign kings. Daniel remained in governmental service through the reigns of the kings of Babylon and into the reign of Cyrus of Persia after the Persians became the dominant world power <Dan. 1:21; 10:1>.

Daniel was also a person of deep piety. His book is characterized not only by prophecies of the distant future but also by a sense of wonder at the presence of God. From his youth Daniel was determined to live by God's law in a distant land (see <Daniel 1>). In moments of crisis, Daniel turned first to God in prayer before turning to the affairs of state <2:14-23>. His enemies even used his regularity at prayer to trap him and turn the king against him. But the grace of God protected Daniel <chap. 6>.

After one of his stunning prophecies <chap. 9>, Daniel prayed a noble prayer of confession for his own sins and the sins of his people. This prayer was based on Daniel's study of the Book of Jeremiah <Dan. 9:2>. He was a man of true devotion to God.

So the Book of Daniel is more than a treasure of prophetic literature. It also paints a beautiful picture of a man of God who lived out his commitment in very troubled times. We should never get so caught up in the meanings of horns and beasts that we forget the human dimension of the book-the intriguing person whose name means "My God is Judge."

The Assyrian Empire

  • An empire founded by Nimrod
  • It extended from east of the Tigris, possibly to Egypt
  • Its armies invade the land of Israel under Pul
  • Other rulers included Tiglath, Shalmaneser, Sennacherib
  • Army of, destroyed by the angel of the Lord
  • Alliances with, sought by Judah and Israel
  • Israelites subject to and carried captive into because of sin

Prophetic Scriptures Concerning The Assyrian Empire With Prophetic Implications Underlined And Highlighted

Isa 7:17-25 - The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.

18       And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

19       And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.

20       In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.

21       And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;

22       And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

23       And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.

24       With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

25       And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.   (KJV)

Isa 8:4-10 - For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

5          The LORD spake also unto me again, saying,

6            Forasmuch as this people refuses the waters of Shiloh that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;

7          Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:

8          And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

9            Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.

10       Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

Isa 10:5-34

5          O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

6          I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

7            Howbeit he meanest not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

8          For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?

9          Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

10       As my hand have found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11       Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

12            Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

13       For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: (Compare Daniel 7:25, 10, 11:36-45 with Antichrist’s attitude)

14       And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

15       Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shakes it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

16            Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

17       And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

18       And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.

19       And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

20       And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21       The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22       For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

23       For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

24            Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwells in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

25       For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.

26       And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

27       And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

28       He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages:

29       They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30       Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth.

31            Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.

32       As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33            Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

34       And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.   (KJV)

Isa 14:24-28

24       The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

25       That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

26       This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.

27       For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

28       In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.   (KJV)

Isa 19:23-25

23       In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.

24       In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:

25       Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.   (KJV)

Isa 20:(All)

1          In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against Ashdod, and took it;

2          At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.

3          And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;

4          So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

5          And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

6          And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?

Isa 30:27-33

27            Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

28       And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.

29       Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.

30       And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.

31       For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.

32       And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.

33       For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.   (KJV)

Isa 31:8-9

8          Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.

9          And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.   (KJV)

Isa 37:21-35

21       Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

22       This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

23       Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

24       By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

25       I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

26       Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

27            Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

28       But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

29            Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

30       And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

31       And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

32       For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

33            Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

34       By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

35       For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.   (KJV)

Jer 1:15

15       For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.   (KJV)

Ezek 31:(All)

1          And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2          Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

3            Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.

4          The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.

5            Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.

6          All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations.

7          Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.

8          The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

9          I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

10            Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

11       I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.

12       And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

13       Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:

14       To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

15       Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

16       I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

17       They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

18       To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.   (KJV)

Jonah 3:1-4

1          And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

2          Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

3          So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

4          And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.   (KJV)

Nahum 1:(All)

1          The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

2          God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

3          The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

17       Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

18       Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

19       There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

Zeph 2:13-15

13       And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.

14       And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds; for he shall uncover the cedar work.

15       This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.   (KJV)

Zech 10:11

11       And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart away.

The Sons Of Greece, The Sons Of Judah

This is a prophetic verse concerning the war on Israel in the last days by the “sons” of Greece, or in reality the revised Grecian Empire.

Zech 9:13-17

13       When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.

14       And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.

15       The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.

16       And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.

17       For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Both Judah and Ephraim are spoken of as being a bow in the hands of God, and as a sword in the hands of a mighty man to help God in the battle of Armageddon against Antichrist who, with his armies surrounding Jerusalem, will have taken the city at the very moment Christ comes to earth to deliver Israel (Zech. 14:1-5,14-15).  If both Judah and Ephraim will be used by God in that day, then both will be gathered back to Palestine by this time to fulfill this passage; therefore, not only Judah, but also Ephraim will be gathered from all nations in sufficient numbers to fight in this battle for their own existence.

This is one of a number of scriptures predicting the revival of the Grecian Empire under Antichrist to fight against Israel in the last days.  When we read here of the sons of Zion being raised up against the sons of Greece we are to understand it as a reference to the battle of Armageddon when warriors of the Revived Grecian Empire of Daniel 8 and Daniel 11 will be fighting against the sons of Zion (Israelites) at the second coming of Christ (Zech. 9:13).

In this battle the Lord will literally be seen over the sons of Zion (Zech. 9:14; Zech. 14:1-5; Isaiah 63:1-6; Joel 2:11; 2 Thes. 1:7-10; Jude 1:14-15; Rev. 11:15; Rev. 19:11-21).

Isaiah 63:1-6

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. [2] Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? [3] I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. [4] For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. [5] And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. [6] And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

Joel 2:11

And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executes his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

2 Thes. 1:7-10

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, [8] In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; [10] When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

Jude 1:14-15

And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, [15] To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Rev. 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Rev. 19:11-21

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. [12] His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. [13] And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. [14] And the armies that were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. [15] And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. [16] And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. [17] And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; [18] That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. [19] And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21] And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

The arrow of the Lord that will "go forth as the lightning" must refer to the flaming fire with which Christ and His angels will come. The blowing of a trumpet by God will be literally true in that day (Isaiah 27:13; Joel 2:1,15; Matthew 24:31).  The Lord of Hosts will defend His people (Zech. 9:15) and save them (Zech. 9:16).

Isaiah 27:13

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

Joel 2:1

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

Joel 2:15

Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:

Matthew 24:31

And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Zech. 9:15-16

The Lord of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar. [16] And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.

SUMMARY OF DANIEL

Date and place:  Written from Babylon and Shushan about 606 or 616 B.C. to 536 B.C.

Author: Daniel, a captive prince from Judah (Daniel 1:3-6), an interpreter of dreams and visions (Daniel 1:17; Daniel 2:12-49; Daniel 4:8-27; Daniel 5:10-31), prime minister under several kings (Daniel 2:46-49; Daniel 5:29; Daniel 6:1-3), and prophet of God (Daniel 7:28; Daniel 8:1; Daniel 9:21-23; Daniel 10:1-12; Daniel 12:4-13).  See notes on § Daniel 1.

Theme: Prophecies of the Gentile world kingdoms from Daniel's day to the Millennium and eternal kingdom of God on earth (Daniel 2:38-45; Daniel 7:17-27; Daniel 8:20-25; Daniel 9:24-27; Daniel 11:40-12:13).  Daniel also records the history of Babylon and Medo-Persia under Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 2:1-4:37), Belshazzar (Daniel 5:1-31; Daniel 7:1; Daniel 8:1), Darius the Mede (Daniel 6:1-28; Daniel 9:1), and Cyrus the Persian (Daniel 10:1-11:1).  The universal theory that the book of Daniel covers the whole length of the times of the Gentiles is false.  Daniel saw these times as happening from his day on, but that does not prove he predicted their entire length.  He only saw the world kingdoms that were to oppress Israel from his day to the setting up of God's kingdom on earth.  He could not predict the history of the oppression of Israel by the Egyptians and Assyrians before his day.  There are eight world empires in the times of the Gentiles.  See The Times of the Gentiles.
